Parents often know to visit a pediatrician when their child is sick, but routine well-child visits are crucial for healthy development. The Bright Futures/American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides comprehensive health guidelines known as the "periodicity schedule." This schedule outlines recommended screenings and assessments at each well-child visit from infancy through adolescence.
Schedule of Well-Child Visits:
First week (3-5 days old)
1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months
12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years (24 months)
2 ½ years (30 months), 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, and annually from 6 to 21 years
Benefits of Well-Child Visits:
Prevention: Scheduled immunizations and advice on nutrition and safety.
Tracking Growth & Development: Monitoring physical growth and developmental milestones.
Raising Concerns: Opportunity to discuss any worries about your child's development, behavior, or health.
Team Approach: Builds a strong relationship between pediatrician, parent, and child for optimal health.
